The neo-classical style took its inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquity. The heyday of the manufactory began with the appointment of Conrad Sörgel von Sorgenthal as its head in 1784. The excellent painters Sorgenthal hired were often masters in other areas as well. Anton Kothgasser (1769-1851) was a well known glass painter and Moritz Michael Daffinger (1790-1849) a famous miniature portraitist. Acanthus garlands, draperies and palmettes, cylindrical or conical cups with angular handles and vases à la Grecque, an incomparably opulent kind of painting and the choice of special porcelain colours such as cobalt blue, characterise the neo-classical style which is unique in its splendour. Neo-classical patterns demand the highest degree of virtuosity from porcelain painters.
