The home of porcelain is China. Ceramics that correspond with today’s concept of porcelain, were already being made at the time of the T’Ang Dynasty (618-706AD). Chinese porcelain probably came to Europe for the first time with Marco Polo who returned to Venice in 1295. Thus it is not surprising that the first porcelain to be made in Europe was decorated exclusively with Chinese patterns. The European fondness for things from the Far East is reflected in several of the oldest designs at Augarten, the “Chinoiserie” patterns.
